Epictetus — The Slave

What if someone comes up to me when I'm alone and murders me? You fool — they can't murder you. They can only murder your body. So what kind of loneliness is left? What are you really missing? Why do we make ourselves worse than children? What do children do when they're left alone? They pick up shells and dirt. They build something, then knock it down and build something else. They never run out of ways to keep busy. So should I sit down and cry if you sail away? Should I weep because I've been left alone? Do I have no shells or dirt to play with? Children act this way because they don't think much. We have knowledge, and yet we make ourselves miserable.

Epictetus — The Slave Original

Well then, if some man should come upon me when I am alone and murder me? Fool, not murder You, but your poor body. What kind of solitude then remains? what want? why do we make ourselves worse than children; and what do children do when they are left alone? They take up shells and ashes, and they build something, then pull it down, and build something else, and so they never want the means of passing the time. Shall I then, if you sail away, sit down and weep, because I have been left alone and solitary? Shall I then have no shells, no ashes? But children do what they do through want of thought (or deficiency in knowledge), and we through knowledge are unhappy.
